BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Sunday reported 14,141 new COVID-19 cases and 386 more deaths, taking the total number in the country to 2,654,811 and the death toll to 74,910.

A total of 2,109,702 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 5,538 remain in intensive care units, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman of the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

MOSCOW -- Russia reported 8,419 more COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 4,880,262, the official monitoring and response center said on Sunday.

The country's COVID-19 death toll rose by 334 to 113,326 in the past day, while the number of recoveries grew by 7,517 to 4,496,132.

BEIJING -- The World Health Organization (WHO) endorsement of a Chinese COVID-19 vaccine was hailed as a milestone achievement by Dr. Gauden Galea, WHO representative to China.

The WHO in Geneva announced on Friday the decision to grant Emergency Use Listing to the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Biotec Group.

JOHANNESBURG -- Eleven cases of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 and four of B.1.617.2 variants have been detected in South Africa, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Saturday night.

According to Mkhize, the Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa confirmed four cases of the B.1.617.2 variant, which was first detected in India, have been detected in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and all the person had a recent history of travelling from India.
