Russia records 19,594 daily COVID-19 infections

MOSCOW, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Russia registered 19,594 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 7,214,520, the official monitoring and response center said Thursday.

The nationwide death toll grew by 794 to 195,835, while the number of recoveries increased by 17,326 to 6,452,398.

Meanwhile, Moscow reported 2,479 new cases, taking the city's total to 1,594,121.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he is self-isolating after "several dozen people" in his close entourage have contracted COVID-19.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that there was currently no plan of imposing a lockdown in Russia, and there was no consensus that a new wave of infections was coming.
